Making Room for More Furry Friends

Space at the current shelter on Hart Drive has reached capacity. As Marie Aldred, President of Furry Friends explained in an interview with the Barrie Examiner, "a lot of cats have escaped being euthanized because they've come here, but we just can't take any more. We have a lot of moms and babies, and some pregnant cats that have kittens on the way.”

"We've renewed our lease (at our current shelter) for two more years, and hope to have the new shelter built by then," Aldred said. "But it costs a lot of money to build the new place and we have to raise about $300,000."

With a gift from a very generous benefactor, we are able to make a dream come true and buy the land for our new, tailor-made shelter. We are excited that we will soon be able to provide care for the ever-increasing number of vulnerable animals in Barrie. You and your family, friends, classmates and colleagues can play an important role in this exciting “pet project” by donating or volunteering.

Phase One: Purchase of New Property (status: complete):

• Land purchased at 455 Tiffin Street.
• Existing structure removed to make space for new 3,600-square-foot facility.

Phase Two:  Getting Ready – permits, permits, permits (status: ongoing)

This new shelter will be built to perfection, meeting or exceeding standards and ensuring protection of the environment.

• Ongoing consultations with representatives from City of Barrie, Bear Creek Conservation Authority and Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority. Site walk with Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority completed to identify any environmental problems. Trees on west side of property will be preserved.

• Removal and decommissioning of old well on the property

• Boring for land stability

• Land survey and topography plus additional survey work to provide consultants with enough information to complete the site plan

• Artist concept completed by Ian Malcolm, designer of Nauticus condos on Lakeshore (done)

Phase Three: Building from the Ground Up

We plan to have the new shelter built in 2011. You can make a real difference to the lives of helpless animals in Barrie by donating now.
